Your Business Idea Won’t Work! Here are Five Things to Consider

Has anyone ever told you that before?

"Your idea is not good."

"You’ll never find a customer."

"Your concept is not a 'thing'."

"No one will ever pay money for that."

If you have been told that before OR you tell yourself that, here are 5 things that I want you to consider:

1) How much do you believe in your idea?

No one will believe in, or understand, your idea(s) more than you will. What will get you through those tough days, which there will be many of, is your passion and belief in your overall mission.

2) Someone has to be the first for everything.

Stop trying to start a business based off of someone else’s proof of concept. Why let someone one else pioneer a path in what YOU believe in and succeed at it first. Instead, set a precedent for what you do and what you offer and let the attention and energy flow to you.

3) Does your concept stem from your personal experience, needs, or obstacles?

Have you experienced or noticed something that you wish that you had the solution? Did you wish that you had someone to help you with a need but you couldn’t find help or an existing solution? Is there a reoccurring problem, void, or shortage that you know about? The best businesses stem from the owner’s personal needs, problems, and experiences.

4) Some of the most successful business owners out there were first told that they wouldn’t succeed.

There are countless entrepreneurs who were told “no” hundreds of times before they got a “yes” or they were told that there wasn’t a need for their business idea but, they kept on going, trying and failing, learning and growing, and then morphed into what they are today.

A great example of that is Jamie Siminoff, the founder of the Ring Doorbell. He first thought of the ring doorbell in 2011 and was told “no” from the well-known successful investors on the show Shark Tank (my favorite show!) in 2013 who didn’t see or believe in the potential demand or need for his product. Six years later, he sold his company to Amazon for over $1 billion!

Siminioff says that travel is “one of the best tools” that he has as an inventor to clear his mind and carve out personal time for himself.

He also said that he values what his hard-working father once told him which is that “if you want to achieve something, you have to work for it”.

5) Find pillars of strength for your idea.

What research is out there that can support your anecdotal ideas? Once you have your reasons for what you believe in, find support for them. This could be studies, case studies, research, statistics, quotes, and more.

Here are quotes from well-known entrepreneurs who failed several times and were told “no” but kept on going and became the successful business owners that they are known for today.

“Fear is a disease. Hustle is the antidote…where it is that you are afraid of, go after it!” -Nicholas Woodman, CEO and Founder of GoPro

“Fearlessness is not the absence of fear. It’s the mastery of fear. It’s about getting up one more time than we fall down” -Arianna Huffington, Founder of The Huffington Post

“Don’t worry about failures, worry about the chances you miss when you don’t even try” -Jack Canfield, Author of the Chicken Soup for the Soul book series

“My experience has shown me that the people who are exceptionally good in business aren’t so because of what they know, but because of their insatiable need to know more” -Milton Hershey, Founder of The Hershey Company
